Severance is back in the spotlight — even without premiering anything new

Some series only become a topic of conversation when they release a new episode. "Severance", from Apple TV+, is an exception: even without a new scene currently airing, it has once again dominated streaming conversations in recent weeks. The reason is simple — filming for the third season officially began on July 27, 2026, and every bit of news from the set, no matter how small, has been enough to reignite the interest of those still processing the end of the second season.

The series' trajectory helps explain this collective anxiety. "Severance" premiered in 2022 and gradually built its reputation, until it truly exploded with the second season, released in 2025. The premise — employees of the mysterious Lumon corporation who undergo a procedure to separate work memories from personal-life memories — became one of the most talked-about cases in recent science fiction. The second season ended with 94% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and appeared on several lists of the year's best series. In the awards arena, its performance is also impressive: the production has already accumulated more than three dozen Emmy nominations over the course of its run.

What explains the buzz now is precisely the combination of accumulated anticipation with new information trickling in little by little. After the renewal for the third season was confirmed in March 2025, fans went more than a year without major updates — until filming began, announced on Apple TV's official social media accounts, reigniting the conversation. Add to that the reminder that season 2 ended with Mark's shocking decision to stay with Helly, breaking with his "outie's" planned reunion with Gemma — quite the cliffhanger to keep any audience in suspense for months.

There is also some interesting movement on the creative team. Ben Stiller, a key figure in the series' aesthetic, will not direct episodes of this third season so he can focus on production, while filmmaker Kogonada takes over directing much of the new episodes. The main cast remains the same — Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, Christopher Walken and Patricia Arquette remain at the helm of the story inside and outside the corridors of Lumon.

The bad news, for those already counting the days, is that the wait is still likely to be long: the most realistic predictions point to a premiere between mid and late 2027. But if there's one thing "Severance" has already proven, it's that it knows how to turn silence into anticipation — and, apparently, fans don't mind waiting a little longer for Kier.
