Young Americans

Post by Carl »

Since we’re opening a TV section, I HAVE to talk about my ultimate short-lived obsession: Young Americans (2000). Tell me I’m not the only one who was completely heartbroken when it got canceled after just one season! The Rawley Academy vibe, the soundtrack (Sixpence None the Richer, Joan Osborne...), and the whole Scout and Bella drama had me hooked. It deserved so much more than just 8 episodes. 😐😐😪

You are NOT alone, this cancellation still hurts!! Young Americans was absolute peak 2000s teen drama. The Rawley Academy vibe was everything, the soundtrack was a core memory, and the Scout/Bella drama had a chokehold on me. Honestly, Hamilton and Jake’s storyline alone deserved at least 3 seasons. Such an underrated gem, so glad someone is finally talking about it!

Finally some people culture in this forum! Man, The WB in the early 2000s was just unmatched. Networks actually took risks with atmospheric, character-driven dramas instead of pumping out the generic, hyper-stylized TikTok bait shows we get on streaming today. That soundtrack alone... hearing Sixpence None the Richer or Joan Osborne during those scenes gave me absolute chills. It had that specific, cozy summer-into-fall aesthetic that literally died with physical television. Honestly, the main reason the show got killed after 8 episodes was because Coca-Cola was sponsoring the entire thing and pulling all the strings behind the scenes, which ruined the pacing.Hamilton and Jake’s storyline was lightyears ahead of its time, though. If that show aired just two or three years later, it would have run for 5 seasons easy. They don't make teen dramas with this much soul anymore.
