The new DC Studios feature film Supergirl has officially set its home streaming date on HBO Max, making its subscription debut on September 10, 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the high-profile adaptation kicked off its global campaign with a June 26 theatrical rollout before landing on the streaming service following a 76-day theatrical window.
Inspired directly by the acclaimed 2021 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the project arrived in theaters as the second feature in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe. Carrying a production budget between $170 million and $186 million, the movie ended its primary box office run at $126.4 million worldwide. While critics gave the cosmic space fantasy mixed reviews—leaving it with a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes—the film built a dedicated vocal fanbase for its distinct, gritty approach to comic book storytelling.
The sudden surge of interest around Supergirl stems from its swift digital pivot to streaming. With Warner Bros. Discovery confirming both the exclusive subscription premiere on HBO Max and a scheduled HBO linear television debut, viewers are gearing up to reassess the polarising blockbuster at home. Rather than a traditional origin tale set in Metropolis, the plot follows an interstellar revenge mission alongside Krypto the Superdog across distant galaxies, offering a tonally different experience from classic superhero fare.
Led by House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock as a world-weary Kara Zor-El, the ensemble cast features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem, Eve Ridley, David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman, and Jason Momoa making his franchise debut as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. Screenwriter Ana Nogueira adapted the narrative, focusing heavily on Kara’s traumatic upbringing on a floating fragment of destroyed Krypton.
With its arrival on home screens, Supergirl now gets a fresh runway to capture the wider streaming audience and establish its permanent place in the evolving DC screen landscape.
