‘The Paper’ Season 2 Arrives on Peacock This Week – And the Renewal Came Before Season 1 Even Aired

Por Thiago Rangel03 de September de 2026

"The Paper" is about to do something most shows never get the chance to do twice: prove itself all over again, on its own terms. The Office-universe spinoff returns to Peacock on September 9, 2026, and the timing matters, because Season 2 exists only thanks to one of the earliest renewal decisions NBCUniversal has made in recent memory — Peacock ordered a second season a full day before Season 1 even premiered.

The series comes from former "Office" showrunner Greg Daniels and "Nathan for You" creator Michael Koman, following the same documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch as they turn their cameras on a struggling Midwestern newspaper, the Toledo Truth Teller, and its enthusiastic new editor-in-chief Ned Sampson, played by Domhnall Gleeson. Season 1 dropped all 10 episodes on Peacock on September 4, 2025, in a binge release, a last-minute format change Peacock made after seeing early positive reactions and recognizing that "The Office" itself has become one of the most-binged shows of all time. Oscar Nunez returned as Oscar Martinez, giving the new show its one direct tether to the original series, while the rest of the cast, including Sabrina Impacciatore, built the newsroom from scratch.

What makes the current moment worth paying attention to isn't just that Season 2 is arriving, it's how much confidence NBCUniversal put behind the show before anyone outside a test screening had seen it. The Season 2 renewal was announced by Gleeson and Impacciatore on NBC's "Today" show the morning before the Season 1 premiere, and insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that Daniels had already started developing second-season ideas, with the network wanting to keep the momentum going rather than wait and see. For a franchise spinoff with no built-in guarantee of connecting with audiences, that kind of pre-premiere vote of confidence stood out even at the time, and it's part of why Season 2's arrival now reads less like a routine renewal and more like a bet that's about to be tested.

Daniels and Koman remain at the creative helm for Season 2, and Gleeson has talked about consulting Steve Carell while shaping his role as Ned, a small but telling detail for a show that's constantly being measured against the original's legacy. The early renewal also set up a "regular cadence" for the franchise, according to reporting at the time, positioning "The Paper" to return around the same time each year, and Season 2's September 9 premiere date follows that pattern almost exactly one year after Season 1 dropped. Sky picked up exclusive UK and Ireland rights for the new season, another sign of how far the show's reach extended before its second batch of episodes even landed.

A year ago, "The Paper" was a spinoff nobody could fully vouch for yet. Now it's back with a full season already banked on trust rather than data, and September 9 is when that trust either pays off or gets its first real test.
