Pirates of the Caribbean – Legacy

By Thiago Rangel — August 22, 2026

More than two decades after setting sail for the first time, Pirates of the Caribbean has become more than a film franchise. It has become part of the collective imagination — one of those fictional universes that span generations and continue to spark conversation far beyond the big screen.

Much of that legacy has a name and a face: Jack Sparrow. The way the character was created — unstable, comedic, and almost like a creature unto himself within the movie — changed audiences’ expectations of what a blockbuster protagonist could be. Years after the first film’s release, his catchphrases, mannerisms, and even his makeup remain among the most recognizable and frequently parodied elements of pop culture, appearing in costumes, videos, and memes that never seem to go out of style.

The impact also made its way back to where it all began. The original Disney park attraction was redesigned over the years to incorporate elements from the films, creating a rare cycle in which the theme park inspired the movies, and the movies, in turn, reinvented the attraction.

And the future of the universe continues to fuel fans and the press: rumors of a possible reboot, speculation over who might — or might not — wear Jack Sparrow’s tricorn hat again, and the question that refuses to disappear — could Johnny Depp ever return to the franchise? The signals come and go, but one thing is certain: the waters of Pirates of the Caribbean are far from empty.
