Pirates of the Caribbean: First Characters

By Thiago Rangel — August 22, 2026

If “Creation” planted the seed, it was The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) that brought the franchise’s definitive cast to life — along with the tone that would shape every film that followed.

Jack Sparrow arrived unlike any blockbuster protagonist before him: stumbling, ambiguous, comedic, and utterly unpredictable. A captain without a ship, without a crew, and seemingly without a moral compass, yet somehow capable of winning over audiences with every eccentric gesture. Beside him, Will Turner represented the more traditional hero — a blacksmith in love, willing to do anything to save the person he cares about — while Elizabeth Swann broke the mold of the “damsel in distress,” emerging as brave, determined, and increasingly in control of her own story as the saga unfolded.

And then there was Barbossa: the cursed villain, commander of the undead crew of the Black Pearl, who brought the supernatural element that would become a defining feature of the universe. Skeletons beneath the moonlight, ancient curses, forbidden treasures — the blend of swashbuckling adventure and fantasy mythology was born here, and it would never leave the franchise.

Together, these four characters did more than carry the first movie: they established the formula that would make Pirates of the Caribbean one of cinema’s most beloved universes — humor, heart, and just a touch of the supernatural, all guided by the same compass.
