After a rocky season and a two-year wait, “American Horror Story” is returning to FX and Hulu on September 24, 2026, with a thirteenth installment simply titled “AHS: 13.” The premiere is arriving with an unusual format: 13 half-hour episodes, with the opening week delivering three episodes at once, another three the following Thursday, and then two episodes a week until the finale lands on October 29. For a franchise that built its identity on reinvention every season, this one is drawing attention less for a new concept and more for who’s showing up to inhabit it.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, “American Horror Story” first premiered in 2011 with “Murder House” and has since moved through eleven distinct anthology chapters, from “Asylum” and “Coven” to “Freak Show,” “Hotel,” “Cult,” “Apocalypse” and beyond, before Season 12’s “Delicate” broke from the usual formula in 2023. That season was based on a novel rather than an original story, wasn’t run by Murphy or Falchuk in the showrunner chair, and left out much of the recurring cast fans expect from the series, which made it land as a noticeable departure. Across its run, the franchise has been streamed more than 700 million hours globally, but “Delicate” is widely regarded as one of its weaker outings, which set up Season 13 as something of a course correction.
That correction is the real story behind the current buzz. Murphy is pivoting back to the format that built the show’s fanbase in the first place: a reunion of series veterans playing multiple roles, with the plot partly picking up the witches from “Coven,” Season 3 of the anthology. Evan Peters returns to take on five characters, Sarah Paulson is playing six or seven, and Jessica Lange is back for four of her most recognizable roles, including Constance Langdon, marking her first appearance since she left the series after “Freak Show” in 2015 over the scale of the time commitment. Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe, Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman round out the returning lineup, and Murphy has said the plan for Season 13 was never framed as an ending — he’s already working out ideas for Season 14 while this one is still rolling out.
The cast is doing most of the promotional heavy lifting, but there’s a footnote worth mentioning: Ariana Grande was announced as part of the Season 13 lineup on Halloween 2025, only for The Hollywood Reporter to confirm in July 2026 that she’d exited the season due to a scheduling conflict with her Eternal Sunshine tour. Her spot in the ensemble went instead to Paul Anthony Kelly, who previously worked with Murphy on “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” and is reportedly playing a central role this season. Murphy and Falchuk remain at the creative helm, which matters here specifically because their direct involvement was one of the things missing from “Delicate.”
None of this guarantees Season 13 recaptures the show’s earlier peak, but the ingredients are the ones fans have been asking for since 2015: familiar actors back in familiar territory, a connection to one of the franchise’s most beloved seasons, and the creators who built the show in the first place back in charge of it. After “Delicate” left plenty of longtime viewers cold, “AHS: 13” is betting that going back to what worked is its own kind of reinvention.
