Harry Potter – First Characters

By Thiago Rangel — August 12, 2026

With the first book published in 1997, Rowling hadn’t just told a story — she had opened a door, and now she needed to populate the world on the other side of it. Hogwarts couldn’t just be the backdrop for Harry, Ron, and Hermione: it needed to feel like a real school, full of people, rivalries, memorable teachers, and mysteries that extended far beyond the main trio.

The idea, throughout the following books, was to expand the universe in layers — each new character revealing one more piece of Harry’s past, of the rules of that magical world, or of the war brewing in the shadows. Rowling planted clues years in advance, and almost every new face carried a secret waiting to be revealed.

That was how, between 1998 and 1999, names that would become central arrived: Sirius Black, revealed in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to be something very different from what he seemed at first glance; Remus Lupin, the teacher who hid his own curse; and Draco Malfoy, the rival whose complexity grew with every page. Severus Snape, present since the first book, began to gain layers of ambiguity that would only be resolved years later. And in 2003, Luna Lovegood arrived to prove that eccentricity could also be a form of courage.

Each new character didn’t just expand the cast — they silently rewrote what readers thought they already knew about the first ones, transforming Hogwarts into a place where no story ever truly felt finished.
